Spiritual Direction

Spiritual Direction is a lost art, reclaimed in recent decades, of one soul companioning another on the spiritual journey we all walk. Margaret Guenther calls spiritual direction “holy listening.”

Sharing our path with a trusted guide or director can help us keep our spiritual focus. Usually long-term, spiritual direction can also be utilized for short-term guidance and direction.

Spiritual direction can be done one-on-one or with a group. It can also be helpful for couples who are intentional about their spiritual journey together.

Unlike a “traditional” counseling situation, spiritual direction is not hierarchical, but based on a model of companioning or presence. Some directors liken the process to that of “midwifing.”

Spiritual directors are professionals, held to a code of professional ethics, among which are confidentiality and ongoing training and supervision. Many, including Rev. Dyer, belong to Spiritual Directors International.
